How the Money Math Was Built

The reference configuration everywhere is the iPhone 17 Pro, 256GB, $1,099 — the phone this crowd actually buys. Lease totals are monthly price × term, from Apple's launch-day pricing. Coverage adds use current AppleCare+ subscription rates or an AppleCare One slot. All figures exclude sales tax, which applies to every route roughly equally.

One reconstruction, flagged in the guide: Apple replaced the iPhone Upgrade Program page with a wind-down notice on launch day, removing the pricing, so the old program's 17 Pro monthly (~$57) is rebuilt from Apple's published formula — sticker plus bundled AppleCare+ with theft and loss, divided by 24. The press-verified base-model figures (Macworld's $42.41) confirm the formula produces the right numbers.

The buy-and-resell route uses Swappa average sale prices minus roughly 3% marketplace fees. That market is unusually strong in mid-2026; the guide says so rather than pretending the number is permanent.

The Model & Program Structure
Apple Upgrade launched July 28, 2026; Klarna-financed lease; iPhone/Watch at 12 or 24 months, iPad/Mac at 24 or 36; return, upgrade, or buy out at term end
Apple Newsroom, July 28, 2026. Terms confirmed across MacRumors, AppleInsider, 9to5Mac launch coverage.
No lease fee: lease payments plus buyout equal the sticker price
MacRumors: "Klarna is not charging a fee for the leasing program, so an iPhone that's $1,099 can be leased and then purchased for $1,099 with no extra cost beyond taxes."
Klarna is the lessor and holds title during the term; the buyout runs through Klarna; returned devices go physically back to Apple (prepaid mail kit or Apple Store, within 14 days of an upgrade); at lease end there is a six-month decision window, after which automatic purchase charges begin. Who captures the resale value of a returned device — Apple buying back at a contracted residual, or Klarna remarketing — is not publicly disclosed; the guide's "Klarna holds the resale bet" is the structural default reading of a lease, not a disclosed term
Old program: Citizens One 24-month 0% loan, AppleCare+ bundled, upgrade after 12 payments, ownership after 24; hard credit pull, credit card only
Apple Legal: iPhone Upgrade Program Terms and a decade of program documentation. Enrollment closed July 28, 2026; existing loans run to completion.

The trade-in indifference point: $552 of rent vs. ~$549 for buy-at-$1,099-then-trade-in-at-~$550; MacRumors' worth-it analysis independently frames the lease as Apple betting on >50% one-year retention

The affordability context: the lease launched amid tariff- and memory-shortage-driven price increases, shifting attention from sticker to monthly payment
How Long You Actually Keep It
42% of US iPhone buyers now retire a phone owned 3+ years, up from 32% a year earlier and 24% five years earlier
CIRP, twelve months ending September 2025, via Secondary Market News.
Global average smartphone replacement cycle ~3.5 years
Typical keeps: Watch 4–5 years, iPad 5–6, Mac 5+
Editorial synthesis of Apple's software-support windows, the vintage/obsolete hardware policy, and Apple IT consultancy guidance. Softer numbers than the CIRP survey data, and labeled "typical" for that reason.
"A decade of the old program never bent this curve" — an inference, not a measured fact: CIRP pegged Upgrade Program usage at ~16% of US buyers (2019, cited secondhand), the 3+-year keep share rose from 24% to 42% across the program's final five years anyway, and CIRP's fast-upgrader research (May 2026: quick upgraders retire phones with near-perfect batteries and screens) draws no causal link to financing programs
CIRP: "Are Fast Upgraders Renting Their iPhones or Breaking Them?" · keep-share trend cited above. A note on CIRP generally: ~500 US buyers per quarterly wave, self-reported — level estimates are soft, but a five-year trend from consistent methodology is their strongest use.
Apple Card Monthly Installments
Apple Card Monthly Installments: 0% over 24 months for iPhone; carrier (AT&T, Boost, T-Mobile, or Verizon) selected at checkout; phone ships unlocked and can switch carriers immediately
The AppleCare One Math
AppleCare One: $19.99/mo covers any three devices; $5.99/mo each additional, flat rate regardless of device; devices must be in good condition and under four years old
Standalone monthly rates used: iPhone 17 Pro $13.99, iPad Pro $11.49, MacBook Pro 14" $13.99, Watch Series 11 $3.99
iPhone and iPad Pro rates from Apple checkout and post-increase press coverage. MacBook Pro 14" and Watch Series rates from retailer listings and Apple's Watch theft-and-loss disclosure range ($2.99–$5.99 by model) — the two softest numbers on this page; confirm at checkout.
The Fine Print
Early termination owes the remaining monthly payments; three consecutive missed payments terminate the lease and refer the balance to collections; uncovered damage at return is billed at Apple's assessment
MacRumors launch coverage of the Klarna lease agreement terms.
Excluded from leasing: iPhone 16 and 16 Plus, Apple Watch SE, MacBook Neo, Mac mini, iPad (A16), Studio Display
Carrier enforcement is checkout-only: big-three postpaid plan required to complete the lease, but the iPhone ships unlocked and can switch carriers or add an eSIM immediately; no published mid-lease policing
Trade-in at enrollment reduces the monthly lease payment

Everything on this page was gathered July 28, 2026 — launch day. Lease pricing, AppleCare rates, and used-market values all drift; the used market in particular is unusually strong right now and props up the buy-and-resell route more than it historically has. The model (lease vs. loan, slices, the fleet rules) is the durable part.

Revision History
August 2, 2026
V2. Gruber noted that the covered-year math priced AppleCare at the monthly rate; Apple also sells it annually at $139.99, which brings a lease-plus-coverage year to ~$692 — eight dollars from the old program. The scoreboard now carries both rows, month to month and annual.

V1 published, alongside the companion post on randsinrepose.com. Between draft and release: the guide was rebuilt around the post's deal/steal framing, cut from twelve sections to seven (nothing said twice), The Model became the lease lifecycle, and a second fact-check pass corrected the AppleCare price-increase scope (Mac and iPad only), the three-consecutive-payments trigger, and the fate of the old program's page (replaced with a farewell note, not deleted).
July 28, 2026
Initial draft, built the day Apple Upgrade launched. Same-day fact-check pass corrected the Apple Card installment carrier terms (carrier picked at checkout, phone unlocked), the Watch Series and MacBook Pro 14" AppleCare rates, and the used-market resale figures (Swappa data came in far above the initial estimate).
